branch-mongoose began in 2014 when three former Kruger National Park rangers realised that most visitors were missing the best wildlife encounters simply because they lacked local knowledge. The main tourist roads see heavy traffic, and animals learn to avoid them. Meanwhile, quieter gravel tracks and seasonal detours offer far richer experiences—if you know where to look.
We started by mapping our favourite routes and sharing them with friends visiting from overseas. Word spread. What began as informal advice became a structured service. Today, we have documented over forty distinct safari routes across South Africa's major national parks, each refined through hundreds of client journeys and constant field updates.
Our Philosophy
We believe safari travel should be both accessible and meaningful. Package tours often rush between highlights, leaving little space for the quiet moments that define African wilderness—the dung beetle crossing a track, the lilac-breasted roller on a fever tree, the distant rumble of elephants communicating across kilometres.
Our routes build in flexibility. We provide structure without rigidity, giving travellers confidence while preserving the spontaneity that makes safari memorable. Every route includes timing windows rather than strict schedules, allowing you to linger when something extraordinary unfolds.
Conservation at Our Core
Tourism without responsibility is simply extraction. We partner directly with anti-poaching units, contributing a fixed percentage of each booking to ranger salaries and equipment. In 2025 alone, our contributions funded patrol vehicles in three reserves bordering Kruger.
We also work with community conservancies to ensure safari tourism benefits local populations. Many of our recommended lodges employ staff from neighbouring villages and source food locally. This creates economic incentives for conservation that extend far beyond park boundaries.
